Yesterday's #WMHD2017 - healthy organisations need healthy leaders

Yesterday we hosted the final webinar in our #WMHD2017 webinar series. In this event, Kathryn James interviewed Dame Ruth Silver president of FETL (The Further Education Trust for Leadership), to explore Dame Ruth's thinking around mental health and leadership. The webinar was important and, judging by the engagement from the audience, a timely and welcome opportunity to think and talk about the role of leaders and leadership in supporting and promoting mental health in FE sector.

The webinar followed the publication of an article in FE week on 20 October, in which Dame Ruth asserts and reminds us that ‘The whole character of an institution is shaped by its leaders' ethics’ and that ‘Ethical leadership is about listening, about loyalty to the primary tasks of teaching and learning, and about building better relationships with staff and students.’

Here are some thoughts shared at this webinar An image of an advert for Tuesday 31 October MHFE World Mental Health Day webinar with Kathryn James interviewing Dame Ruth Silver – president of FETL (The Further Education Trust for Leadership) exploring Dame Ruth's thinking around mental health and leadershipto give you a flavor of the discussion.

From Dame Ruth Silver:

"You should never lose the care of students as your reference point"

"Leaders have to promote a climate for things to happen"

“[Leaders] should own vulnerabilities, about their own mental health and about what they don’t know”

From one participant:

"Really enjoyed this webinar - food for thought. We need to focus on mental wealth not a deficit in health."

Thank you to all who joined us yesterday, but if you missed it or wish to revisit this discussion, watch this space for the MHFE WMHD2017 webinars box set that will soon be available on this website.
