The economic and social costs of mental health problems in 2009/10

This policy paper from the Centre for Mental Health was published in October 2010 and provides and estimate of what the economic and social costs of mental illness are .

  • The  annual figure, of £105.2 billion for Englandf alone includes the costs of health and social care for people with mental health problems, lost output in the economy, for example from sickness absence and unemployment, and the human costs of reduced quality of life.
  • The 2010 calculation is an update from the estimate of  £77.4 billion published by the Centre in 2003.

The Scottish Association for Mental Health and the Centre for Mental Health have also recently (April 2011) published an equivalent policy paper for Scotland.
