Learning French with Headway
We've recently completed delivery of a Beginners French course at the Headway Unit in East Kent, which has been an amazing experience for all involved.
We were asked to run a Learning Well course for the centre users, who have all suffered from a life-changing head injury. The resulting conditions are far ranging but, as not all are also experiencing mental health issues, it fit into our Group C offer. The group agreed on French as something different. Some rememberd learning it at school; one lady was part French by birth but had never spoken it; some had no experience whatsoever.
After six weeks with our fabulous tutor, Pauline, the group was transformed. They had laughed a lot and learned a lot and are keen to be able to have Top-Ups to keep their new skills fresh. Some of the comments include:
'Good way of life, liked helping each other, good company, I will lead the same type of life in the future.'
'I stuck with it, enjoyed all the laughter, great mixed ways of learning.'
'Knowing I can still learn in the right environment has been a big benefit.'
I feel really thankful to the project that we've been able to support this learning. Hopefully, we can embed it into our community delivery moving forward.
