Diversity Today - Sex and Gender Definitions
‘Sex’ and ‘gender’... Do you know the difference?
The terms ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ are often used interchangeably. In fact, they have very different meanings. Do you know the difference? Check out the definitions below:
Sex: Refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define male or female.
Gender: Refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. Gender can be considered fluid in the sense that a person can change their own gender identity, for example by choosing to live as man despite being born a female.
